Behavior Enrichment Technician

Support Charleston Animal Society’s growing Animal Behavior team and training department by assisting in adoption assessments, perform shelter enrichment, assist in reviewing behavior health of shelter animals, and assist with behavior modifications. Monitor shelter animals and immediately report any behavioral concerns to appropriate supervisor. Work with volunteers who assist in enrichment, assessments, and playgroups. Demonstrate safe handling procedures for all animals. Work closely with all Senior Management and Veterinarians in assessing adoptability of animals. Ability to appropriately apply learning theory concepts and training methods through the use of positive reinforcement. Additional duties as requested including projects.
Possess an understanding of general canine behavior and handling.

Ability to recognize stress signs in various animal species including but not limited to canines.

Willingness to learn and be able to identify animal body language.

Ability to work with animals of all sizes including dogs in excess of 100 lbs.

Possess general animal handling skills.

Frequent bending, reaching, kneeling, walking and standing for 6-8 hours or more per day.

Ability to lift and carry 70lbs.

Ensure a safe work environment and follow safety guidelines.

Take immediate action to address any safety and welfare issues that may put staff members, volunteers, customers or animals at a risk.

Proficient in MS Office and Pet Point.

Consistently maintains a positive attitude treating both people and animals with respect.

Must be a team player who enjoys collaboration.

Companion Animal Behavior experience and Animal Welfare knowledge preferred.

Experience working with under socialized dogs with extreme fear issues preferred.

Knowledge of positive reinforcement and animal training techniques a plus.

Temperament Testing and canine playgroup experience a plus.

Must be comfortable working outdoors in the various weather elements of South Carolina and a shelter environment (extreme heat, cold, dust, dirt, temperature changes, rain, occasional wet floors, animal noises, odors and dander).

Valid driver’s license required and must have excellent driving record.

Must be self-guided individual requiring minimal supervision.

Physical requirements include, but are not limited to, walking, standing and moving of equipment    and animals (ability to lift 70 pounds).

Exposure to various weather conditions on a regular basis.

Primary schedule may include weekdays and/or weekends, including evenings, as appropriate.
