More than 40 state and national animal welfare organizations are gathering in Columbia for the first-ever No Kill South Carolina 2024 (NKSC 2024) State Summit. The “Sprint to the Finish” theme will focus on finding every healthy, treatable and adoptable animal a home, with the goal of making the Palmetto State the first No Kill State across the southern U.S., from Atlantic to Pacific, and across America’s Heartland.
Thursday, December 22nd, just before Christmas, someone abandoned a dog at our gate that was suffering from an injury. She was left tied to a tree in a cardboard box with a life-threatening injury. When our surgical team found her at 7:30 am she needed immediate medical attention. If not for our team’s expertise and care she could have perished. She still has a long road to recovery and is being treated by our team.
While Juliet isn’t out of the woods yet, her health is on the upswing after the removal of 38 hair ties the cat somehow swallowed. “Juliet is in fair condition, but she is being fed very carefully at this time with a feeding tube,” said Charleston Animal Society Associate Director of Veterinary Care Leigh Jamison, DVM. “This blockage has caused a liver condition that we are watching closely.”

Charleston Animal Society is teaming up with Hendrick Automotive Group to get every animal in the shelter “Home for the Holidays.” On Saturday, December 17th, Charleston Animal Society will kick-off the event with fee-waived adoptions, hot cocoa and snacks for visitors, plus pet pictures with Santa (available 10am – 2pm)!
On Giving Tuesday this month, the philanthropic BOBS from Skechers™ collection from The Comfort Technology Company™ and national nonprofit Petco Love announced an initiative supporting hardworking employees at animal welfare organizations nationwide who put their best foot forward for pets in need. The long-time partners are celebrating the holiday season by gifting 1,000 pairs of BOBS® footwear to shelter employees from Petco Love’s extensive network to acknowledge their part in helping pets find homes.
Two days before Thanksgiving, a person found the dog left alone in a cat carrier, in front of an apartment in the Palmilla Apartment Complex in West Ashley. The dog was taken to an emergency vet clinic for treatment of what appear to be chemical burns. Charleston Animal Society veterinarians have continued lifesaving care or the schnauzer-mix, including pain medication and antibiotics.
Who stole “Piggie Stardust?” That’s the question after a pot-bellied pig being cared for by Charleston Animal Society was stolen over the Thanksgiving weekend. North Charleston Police are investigating the theft that occurred in the shelter’s barn. On November 16th, PIggie Stardust was found as a stray at a Home Depot in North Charleston and was then brought to Charleston Animal Society for her protection and care.
This year, there were a record number of 709 entrants who raised a total of $81,699 for Charleston Animal Society’s No Kill South Carolina initiative, helping make our state a friendlier place for animals. When the voting phase closed in September, the public selected three cats and three dogs as the finalists in the running for Spokescat and Spokesdog respectively.
