About the Role
Charleston Animal Society is looking for a full-time Animal Adoption Counselor at our Berkeley Campus. This is a customer service-focused position for someone who loves both animals and people and wants to play a direct role in helping animals find new homes.
Adoption Counselors work primarily with cats and our big shelter dogs, while also helping care for rabbits, small animals, and other animals in our adoption program.
What to Expect
Great customer service is a must. This position involves frequent interaction with adopters, phone calls, paperwork, and computer work.
All jobs at our shelter have significant physical requirements and involve plenty of cleaning, including mopping floors and cleaning kennels. Expect to get dirty — you're working with animals!
Applicants must be at least 18 years old.
Key Responsibilities
- Adhere to the highest ethical standards and provisions of animal care in a safe, competent, professional, and humane manner at all times.
- Greet customers and potential adopters with enthusiasm and professionalism.
- Answer phones professionally and provide accurate information to callers.
- Provide excellent customer service at all times.
- Explain medical and behavioral disclosures to adopters prior to starting the adoption process.
- Administer medication under the supervision of the staff veterinarian.
- Maintain accurate medical and adoption records.
- Provide enrichment to animals.
- Maintain the cleanliness of dogs available for adoption, outside play areas, and Meet & Greet rooms throughout the day.
- Conduct playgroups and work with dogs on basic obedience.
- Maintain the cleanliness of cats available for adoption, cat rooms, and the front lobby throughout the day.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Valid South Carolina Driver’s License and excellent driving record required.
- Prior experience working with cats preferred.
- Ability to provide excellent customer service.
- Demonstrated skill and ability in animal handling, care, and maintenance.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- High degree of organizational skills.
- Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
- Basic data entry knowledge.
- Ability to clean continuously.
