LOWCOUNTRY PAWS UNITE: BERKELEY, CHARLESTON AND DORCHESTER SHELTERS ARE SEVERELY OVERCAPACITY

The primary Tri-County lifesaving shelters are in a crisis. This emergency situation can only be alleviated through adoptions now.

CHARLESTON, SC — Summer temperatures have hit and Lowcountry animal shelters are facing a critical overcrowding crisis. Dogs and kittens are filling every available kennel. Charleston Animal Society, Berkeley Animal Center, and Dorchester Paws are joining forces to launch their second annual lifesaving adoption event, Lowcountry Paws Unite, offering great adoption deals on all animals now through Sunday.

Across the three shelters more than 2,200 animals are in their systems of care.

“Since May these three shelters have taken in thousands of animals in need,” said Charleston Animal Society Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Aldwin Roman. “Now we need the community’s help to come save them.” This emergency situation can only be alleviated through adoptions now.

CAN YOU ADOPT?

Overcrowding in shelters poses significant challenges for both animals and staff. With limited space, resources, and personnel, shelters struggle to provide the necessary care and attention each animal needs.

“Adoptions will help shelters alleviate the strain of overcrowding,” said Berkeley Animal Center Spokeswoman Heather McDowell. “We urgently need to find these dogs and cats new, loving homes during our Lowcountry Paws Unite.”

With so many animals to choose from, families can be sure to find the perfect pet for their lifestyles.

“This truly is a crisis and summer has just begun,” said Dorchester Paws Executive Director April Howard. “This is our bat signal to the community to please come save a life — today.”
