Kennel Manager

Job description

Charleston Animal Society is seeking a Kennel Manager to oversee the day-to-day operations of the kennel facility, including the care and well-being of animals, staff supervision, ensuring proper cleaning protocols are followed, and maintaining a high standard of animal welfare.

Shift: Tuesday – Saturday 8am – 5:30pm (over as needed)

Areas of responsibility include:

Animal Care Management:

  • Monitor the health and behavior of all animals in the kennel, identifying any potential health issues and reporting them to the veterinarian.
  • Ensure animals receive proper feeding, hydration, exercise, and enrichment.
  • Conduct kennel checks to maintain cleanliness and sanitation standards.

Staff Supervision:

  • Lead and train kennel staff on proper animal handling techniques, cleaning procedures, and safety protocols.
  • Assign tasks and delegate responsibilities to kennel staff based on workload and individual skills.
  • Provide performance feedback and address any staff concerns regarding animal care.

Facility Management:

  • Maintain cleanliness of the kennel area, including play areas, walk areas, and animal living spaces.
  • Monitor inventory of supplies.

Reporting:

  • Maintain accurate records of animal activities including feeding logs, daily exercise board, and changes in behaviors.

Requirements:

  • Prior experience in animal care in a kennel setting.
  • Prior leadership experience managing a team of kennel staff.
  • Ability to handle animals of all sizes and temperaments with confidence and safety. This job requires working with very large shelter dogs.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including weekends and holidays.
  • Must be physically fit to perform repetitive tasks like deep cleaning and walking large shelter dogs.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Valid South Carolina Driver’s Licence and excellent driving record required.
