Dear Councilmember __________,
For over 150 years, Charleston Animal Society has served our community and given a second chance to thousands of animals. As such, I am truly alarmed at the ongoing dispute regarding Charleston County and Charleston Animal Society. As a Charleston County taxpayer, I ask that you work in good faith with the Animal Society and put aside petty politics that not only harms the county’s reputation but endangers the lives of animals and threatens public safety in our community.
—–
PICK ONE OF THESE THREE POINTS TO INCLUDE IN YOUR EMAIL / LETTER TO THE EDITOR / SOCIAL MEDIA POST:
- I ask that you work with Charleston Animal Society on a fair contract for the humane disposition of the
animals in our community. Paying only for a five-day stray hold does not guarantee a humane outcome
for the animals, and this community has worked especially hard the last twelve years to move away
from the dogcatcher mentality. - I ask that you end the double taxation you are proposing. Every resident in Charleston County pays Charleston County taxes, so why would Charleston County not cover every citizen who finds a stray animal and brings it to the animal society? Why would citizens in the unincorporated areas be the only ones benefitting from paying taxes for animal services to the county when all citizens pay anyway?
- I ask that you commit publicly and in the proposed contract that you do not support euthanasia for healthy, savable, and treatable animals. Getting dogs and cats ready for adoption is no easy task, but those animals deserve to have a second chance. Only paying for a five-day stray hold and then expecting them to be euthanized after that time and/or not paying for their boarding and treatment is inhumane, and our community truly deserves and demands better than that.
KEEP CORRESPONDENCE CORDIAL AND END WITH A THANK YOU
I appreciate your service to our community, and I hope that you will do the right thing for both our
community and the animals served by both the county and Charleston Animal Society.
Sincerely,
Name
Charleston County resident
