CHARLESTON ANIMAL SOCIETY RECEIVES $120K TO SHARE EXPERTISE WITH ANIMAL SHELTERS ACROSS THE US, THANKS TO MADDIE
Charleston Animal Society has received two grants totaling $120,000 from Maddie’s Fund®, a national family foundation established by Dave and Cheryl Duffield to revolutionize the status and well-being of companion animals, to offer training to animal shelter staff from around the Unites States.
“Thanks to Maddie, we are very excited to share our expertise in foster care and shelter healthcare with colleagues from around the country,” said Charleston Animal Society CEO Joe Elmore. “Maddie’s Fund’s foresight to offer these types of apprenticeships is having a huge impact on the lifesaving work that thousands of shelters do every day.”
These grants, which offer a rich hands-on educational experience, also cover travel and lodging for participants:
• Maddie’s Robust Dog and Cat Foster Apprenticeship Program: $60k will allow expansion of its highly acclaimed foster care model with 36 apprentices from diverse shelters across the country. Charleston Animal Society’s foster family network comprises over 300 families across the Lowcountry.
• Maddie’s Managing Shelter Health Apprenticeship Program: $60k will fund 36 students to learn best practices in shelter medicine from Charleston Animal Society’s Sam Greer Spay-Neuter AAHA accredited Clinic. One of the only combined animal shelter and veterinary clinic in the Southeast to achieve this recognition.
“Charleston Animal Society is a model shelter with its No Kill Charleston and No Kill South Carolina initiatives,” said Lisa Ward, Director of Education, Maddie’s Fund. “We are pleased to provide these grants to help train and educate more animal welfare staff and saving more lives in 2019.”
About Maddie’s Fund
Maddie’s Fund® is a family foundation created in 1994 by Workday® co-founder Dave Duffield and his wife, Cheryl, who have endowed the Foundation with more than $300 million. Since then, the Foundation has awarded more than $225.7 million in grants toward increased community lifesaving, shelter management leadership, shelter medicine education, and foster care across the U.S. The Duffields named Maddie’s Fund after their Miniature Schnauzer Maddie, who always made them laugh and gave them much joy. Maddie was with Dave and Cheryl for ten years and continues to inspire them today. Maddie’s Fund is the fulfillment of a promise to an inspirational dog, investing its resources to create a no-kill nation where every dog and cat is guaranteed a healthy home or habitat. #ThanksToMaddie.
