The Journey from Loss to Love for Two Cane Corsos
Gena and Luca are 8-year-old Cane Corsos. At 73 and 120 pounds, these gentle giants are hard to miss. Their lives were turned upside down one month ago when their beloved dad was in a tragic car accident. He was hospitalized and mostly paralyzed from the neck down.
As their human fought for his life, both Luca and Gena were brought to Charleston Animal Society. It didn’t take long for our staff to fall in love with these sweet old souls. Their big, kind eyes and soft, gray faces melt the hearts of everyone who meets them. Our veterinary team saw to all of their medical needs, and our animal care staff made sure they had plenty of exercise, lots of treats and tons of love.
During his time in the hospital, we sent Gena and Luca’s dad photos and videos of both dogs playing, drooling, relaxing and enjoying the outdoors. He regularly asked about how his cherished canine companions were doing, and we made sure they were safe and comfortable in our care.
Just days after Gena and Luca arrived, we received the news that we had hoped we would never hear. The injuries that Gena and Luca’s dad sustained from the car accident were too great, and he had passed away. In this time of loss, we wanted to make sure these sweet dogs were given their best chance at a new start in a loving home.
In specific cases, like this, our team will reach out to breed-specific rescue organizations that have resources, knowledge and a community that is passionate about a certain breed. Today, both dogs were transported to a Cane Corso-specific rescue organization where professionals with extensive knowledge about Cane Corsos can help them find the most suitable home.
While every animal’s stay at Charleston Animal Society is temporary, we make sure they receive the best care while they are here. Our veterinarians complete a full exam of every animal and each animal is spayed, neutered and vaccinated before they are adopted. If animals require other medical care, like Gena and Luca did, we do everything we can to ensure they are given the best possible chance at a happy, healthy life.
We wouldn’t be able to provide these medical resources to homeless animals if it weren’t for support from our incredible community. You can help us ensure a healthy future for vulnerable animals by donating to Toby’s Medical Fund today!
