1-Week Old Puppies Go to a Foster Home
This week, a 4-year-old dog was brought to a local emergency veterinary clinic with her 3 one-week-old puppies. She had no microchip or collar and was found as a stray, so she and her puppies were transported to Charleston Animal Society. Our staff affectionately named her Milky Way. She was underweight and timid, but clearly a dedicated mother dog, hesitant to go anywhere without her puppies in her sight.
Care for Milky Way
Our expert veterinary team examined her and found that she had mastitis, an infection of her breast tissue, which meant she couldn’t safely nurse her young puppies. She also tested positive for heartworm and whipworm infections, impacting her heart, lungs and intestinal tract. This sweet mother dog was in pain and needed proper treatment fast. She is now receiving antibiotics, pain medication and will be spayed and receive all her vaccinations. Now that she is settling in and receiving lots of love and attention, she is opening up to our animal care staff.
Puppy Love in Foster Care
To give Milky Way the space to recuperate and heal and to ensure her puppies received the care they needed, all three puppies were sent to a local foster home. In their foster home, these three puppies, now named Panda, Grizzly, and Polar, are receiving round-the-clock bottle feedings. Their foster mom is eagerly waiting for their eyes to start opening. They are in wonderful hands with a dedicated family and will continue to receive regular check-ups from our staff.
