Field Trips to Charleston Animal Society
Come Tour Charleston Animal Society!
Charleston Animal Society’s Humane Education Department offers fun and educational field trips & tours that provide the opportunity to see our facility, meet furry friends, and learn about our lifesaving programs and services we offer. Please check out our tour itineraries to choose which tour best suits your needs.
Details:
- Available for K through 12th grade- For safety reasons children attending must be at least 5 years old.
- We request 1 chaperone per 15-20 students. Chaperones are not permitted to bring siblings of student attending.
- Each child attending will be required to bring a signed permission slip.
- Tour time vary.
- There is a fee per group. Additional donations are encouraged and appreciated!
- Youth with severe allergies to animals should not attend.
Option 1: Tour
Take an interactive tour of the Charleston Animal Society and learn how this facility operates. Go behind the scenes and explore the daily work of protecting and helping the hundreds of animals in our care. Participants learn firsthand the responsibility of caring for an animal and the needs of each. Learn about the many different programs we provide to ensure that Charleston remains a no-kill community.
Time: 40 mins
Cost: $30 for up to 15 students; $2 per additional student
Age: 5 and up
Option 2: Service Learning Focus
Take an interactive tour of the Charleston Animal Society and learn how this facility operates. This option focuses on service learning. Students will brainstorm ways to help the shelter animals. Students will make enrichment toys that will enhance the lives of animals in our facility. Student will also be able to learn training techniques and have hands-on time with some of our furry friends.
Time: 1 hour – 1.5 hours
Cost: $60 for up to 40 students; $3 per additional student
Age: 5 and up

Option 3: Science Focus
Take an interactive tour of the Charleston Animal Society and learn the art and science behind this amazing facility. Students and parents will have an opportunity to explore the same route as an animal entering the shelter system. They will test for heartworm disease ( a preventable disease CAS spends $1000 a week on treatment), watch a veterinarian perform a spay/neuter surgery in CAS’s AAHA accredited spay/neuter clinic, and of course meet new furry friends.
Time: 2 hours
Cost: $200 for up to 15 students
Age: 6th grade and up
Example of a Schedule:
15 mins: Introduction of Shelter/Mission
10 mins: Intake procedure
20 mins: Dog Clinic- learn about vaccinations & perform heartworm test, inspect heartworm infected heart
15 mins: Tour of behind the scene animal runs and barn
25 mins: AHHA Surgery- view a surgery, prepare microscope slides, microscope inspection, and animal recovery
10 mins: Dog body language – Behavior
15 mins: Adoption Floor and Meet an animal
10 mins: Wrap up & Group photo
How do we sign up?
If you wish to bring your group for the field trip program please fill out a program request form. Prior to booking, please view our field trip itineraries.
Once your program request is received, the education department will contact you within 3 business days to confirm and complete your booking.
